Mo'Hits records

The term “Posse” is used to describe a group of people gathered to achieve a collective purpose. A Posse cut is a song that features between 3-6 musicians collaborating and delivering memorable verses as well as creating records that eventually become timeless anthems.

Posse cuts are rooted in Hip-hop culture and can be traced back to the 1990s. The format can be said to have been popularized by the Wu-Tang clan after the collective released their debut single ‘Protect Ya Neck’ in 1992.

Since the turn of the decade, Nigerian music has enjoyed some memorable posse cuts. From speaker-rattling Afropop singles to heavy-hitting rap cuts, Posse Cuts have become a part of Afrobeats culture.

This list will document my thoughts on the best posse cuts in Nigerian music since 1999. This is not a ranking. This is simply a celebration of 10 exceptional collaborative efforts. While I’ve been very objective curating this list, there might be hints of personal preferences here or there so don’t be outraged.

I’m also interested in knowing which songs you think are the 10 greatest Nigerian posse cuts since 1999 so let me know in the comments or tweet at me.

Here is the list

10) Feego- Reminisce ft Oladips, Ice Prince & Seriki.

This song is a masterclass in Hip-Hop collaboration. Sossick’s beat is a work of art, expertly balancing melancholy and intensity to bring out the best in each rapper. The verses are uniformly impressive, with Ice Prince and Seriki delivering standout performances. The lyrics are sharp and memorable, with certain lines – like Zamani’s confident assertion, “I never said I’m the best/Google my name and you know the rest” – etching themselves into your mind. This song’s enduring appeal is a testament to its quality and impact.

9) Overloading- Mavins 2.0

Crayon’s performance on the song generated significant buzz, and for good reason. The hook is instantly captivating, setting the tone for a standout record. Crayon’s performance is impressive, but it’s Ayra Starr’s contribution that truly elevates the song. Her performance is exciting, adding depth to the record. Overall, the collaboration results in a memorable listen.

8) King Kong remix- Vector ft Phyno, Reminisce, Uzi & Classic.

This song is a masterclass in rap collaboration, built on innovative production that seamlessly blends Hip-Hop and Ogene music. Each rapper delivers sharp, incisive verses, making it difficult to pinpoint a single standout performance. Uzi’s verse, in particular, is noteworthy for its Eminem-esque intensity, leaving a lasting impression. The song’s strength lies in its collective excellence, with each rapper bringing their A-game. The result is a truly unforgettable record that showcases the best of Nigerian Rap.

7) Molowo Noni- Samklef ft Wizkid, Ice Prince & D Prince.

It’s a shame that Samklef and Wizkid’s chemistry was only captured on one album. The duo could have done more together. However, one will forever be grateful for the legendary songs they created together. One of those records is ‘Molowo Noni’ which also features D’Prince and Ice Prince. A brilliant fusion of Afropop and Hip-hop peppered with heavy drums, pop synths, Rock guitars, and epic-sounding Trumpets. Samklef delivers a simple hook leaving the floor for his collaborators to do justice to this fantastically crafted instrumental. They do just that with Wizkid and D’Prince delivering fine verses befitting of the superb production. But Ice Prince’s verse on this record is nothing short of marvelous. A truly spectacular performance that is a testament to his incredible ability.

6) Dorobucci- Mavins 1.0

The release of ‘Dorobucci’ marked the official debut of the Supreme Mavins dynasty, and it made a significant impact on the music scene. The song quickly gained widespread popularity, becoming a massive hit and cultural phenomenon. Its catchy hook and memorable lyrics made it a favorite among music fans, with the phrase ‘Dorobucci’ becoming a ubiquitous reference point. The song’s influence extended beyond music, with its logo and slogan appearing on merch and in pop culture.

5) Oya- Da Trybe

This record features an impressive lineup of ten rappers, each delivering a strong verse. The opening verse, courtesy of Blaise, sets the tone with a confident and assertive flow. Released in the 2000, this song remains a standout in Nigerian Rap. The production is notable for its bouncy, futuristic beat, while the diverse flows, cadences, and confident rapping create an engaging listen. The combination of these elements makes for a compelling and enjoyable track.

4) Lagos party remix- Banky W ft Naeto C, D’banj, 9ice, Eldee, & Muna

The remix achieves its purpose of revitalizing the original record, injecting new energy and enthusiasm into the track. Banky W assembles an impressive lineup of notable artists from the era, each delivering strong verses. The result is a captivating record that showcases the artists’ skills. The seamless transitions between verses and Banky W’s harmonious background vocals create a cohesive and engaging listening experience. The remix is a testament to the artists’ chemistry and talent.

3) Bootycall- Mo’Hit records

The instant D’Banj’s signature ‘Fi Le’ gave way to the beat, it was evident that something remarkable was about to unfold. ‘Booty Call’ remains unparalleled in its unbridled celebration of the female backside. Wande Coal’s divine melodies set the stage for D’Banj’s energetic performance and Kayswitch’s fantastic verse resulting in a transgenerational anthem that epitomizes the Mo’hits era’s innovative essence.

2) Omode Meta- Tony Tetuila ft Plantashun Boiz, Ruff Rugged N Raw

Tony Tetuila joined forces with Plantashun Boiz and Ruff Rugged N Raw to create ‘Omode Meta’, a fiery response to his former bandmates who had sidelined him after their debut success. The result was the explosive ‘Omode Meta’, a Hip-hop masterpiece featuring four unapologetically disrespectful verses. The single became a massive hit across the nation, catapulting Tony Tetuila’s solo career to new heights while also introducing the world to a rising star: 2face Idibia.

1) Stylee- DJ Jimmy Jatt ft Mode 9, Elajoe, 2baba

DJ Jimmy Jatt’s debut album ‘The Definition’ boasts the iconic ‘Stylee’, an ode to the vibrant city of Lagos. This anthemic track features a menacing instrumental backdrop, complemented by razor-sharp verses from Mode 9 and the late Elajoe, as well as a memorable hook from the legendary 2Baba. The result is a captivating tribute to Lagos, showcasing the city’s energy and spirit.
