Seventeen years since releasing his groundbreaking debut album ‘True Story’, Timaya is a well recognized elder statesman in Nigerian music. With Multiple blockbuster albums that have remained timeless, a plethora of iconic hits that have transcended eras – including one of the most important records in the history of Nigerian music- and a prestigious Grammy nomination that deserves more accolades, Timaya has enjoyed an illustrious career. Now an OG in every definition of the word, Papi Chulo has gracefully settled into his role as a veteran icon.
Timaya’s ninth album, GLADIATOR, is his attempt to reflect his life and career as a fierce, brave and skilled warrior who through sheer will, bravery, and resilience has battled through life’s adversities, emerging victorious every time.
The album is a vibrant sonic tapestry, weaving together a diverse array of genres – from the smooth bounce of late 90s west coast Hip-Hop to the infectious rhythms of Afropop, and the energetic and upbeat vibes of Amapiano and Dancehall. Thematically, the album delves into love and the allure of vanity.
The laid-back late 90s/early 2000s west coast G-funk bounce of Pay Back, is a solid project opener where Timaya delivers a triumphant anthem, recounting his journey from rags to riches and reminiscing about his humble beginnings. Now, basking in the glory of his hard fought success, he’s out for ‘Pay Back‘ – in revenge and in celebration. It’s why he revels in the downfall of his foes who also wish him harm. He gleefully watches as his adversary’s world crumbles unapologetically singing ‘As e dey sweet us, e day pain them’ on the Dancehall anthem ‘Sweet us’.
On ‘Blessings’ featuring British rapper Eugy, He delivers a poignant expression of gratitude to God for the abundant blessings in his life. Through soaring melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and with a voice drenched in emotions, he reflects on the journey that has brought him to this moment, acknowledging the divine. He discusses the luxurious ‘Live-style’ that accompanies the blessings and acknowledges the profound influence wealth has on a person’s life. On the slow-burning Afropop cut, Timaya’s powerful vocals catch your attention as the gentle rhythms of this song hold you in a velvety embrace. It’s the best song on the album. On the speaker rattling Amapiano record ‘Free’, he celebrates the power of a free mind. The song’s infectious groove will make it a fan favorite.
When he’s not reflecting on life’s realities, Timaya focuses his attention on singing the praises of his greatest ‘Treasure’ appreciating her steeze and ‘Composure’ as well her recognizing her abnormal waistline and her incredible ability as a ‘Whinin Criminal’. On the raunchy dancehall banger, Timaya recruits Mr Killa, who is undoubtedly the star of the show delivering uncut lyrics, and untamed rhythms.
With its infectious, pulsating beat and Timaya’s signature growl, ‘Whinin Criminal’ is an ode to the soul snatching touch of a bedroom specialist. The lyrics are a graphic, unflinching exploration of the consuming side of desire.
On the sultry ballad ‘In My Head’, Timaya reveals the all-consuming presence of his love interest, who’s taken up permanent residence in his mind. On the sultry, slow-burning song, Timaya reveals the details of his mental state, where his love interest lives ‘rent-free’. Tiwa Savage delivers a spectacular performance complimenting Chulo’s delivery with her soothing and seductive vocals as well as displaying some very impressive bit of songwriting.
Regardless of all this, He acknowledges the crucial role money plays in keeping love afloat, even as emotions flow. On ‘Na Money’ featuring Konshens, He exposes the realities of love in the modern age and explains that financial stability is the unsung hero of relationships. Which is why he is only focused on ‘Getting his money right’. The mid-tempo Afropop cut is the album’s closer.
With GLADIATOR, Timaya extends his legacy and discography and shows no sign of slowing down as he delivers yet another solid and enjoyable body of work. This album is a testament to his enduring talent, versatility, and willingness to evolve the music.
Through its diverse soundscape, Timaya takes listeners on an enjoyable journey.
